The next Southwell Artists’ Open Studios 2018

ABOUT US

Southwell Artists represents a group of professional artists working in Southwell using a variety of media:- painting, drawing, photography. We formed our group in November 2004 to showcase our work, making it available to the public, via our studios.

Our first SOUTHWELL OPEN STUDIO was extremely successful, attracting over thirteen hundred visitors. By selling 'stickers' as tickets to enter all twelve studios we raised £2,600 for our chosen charity "The Living Paintings Trust".

2005 In November we ran a series of talks, lectures and events as well as opening two venues, which again we are proud to admit was very successful.

2006 We had some new members and opened all the studios during November.

2008 We opened all our studios and invited Artspace artists to join us. Sadly Artspace has now closed due to a lack of funding.

2010 Was another successful event with all studios open and this time a number of invited guests.

In 2012 we held a successful Open Studios on the weekend of October 13th and 14th with over 700 visitors.

Open studios takes place biannually, in the intervening years we organise a ‘Big Draw’ in Southwell Minster. For the Big Draw in 2007 and for the Big Draw in 2009 we received prizes presented at the British Museum by Quentin Blake in 2008 and Posy Simmonds in 2010.

However in 2013 the Southwell Music Festival was inaugurated. For three years combined Open Studios and drawing events with the Music Festival.

Artists enjoyed their association with the festival but because of the crowded programme and so that we ourselves could attend more of the concerts we have decided to return to our former independence. We will hold a Big Draw in the Minster on September 23rd 2017 and have Open Studios for the eighth time in the autumn of 2018.

Over the past two years two artists from the group have had paintings in the Royal Academy summer show.
