Ten large drawings, 2010 – 2012
The most recent of these large works – 'JACKITIN', marks a particular aspect of their evolution, about a passing moment / experience fixed by a rapid intuitive drawing. This acts as a sensory and visual memory. From this source or point of departure the large drawings make their own demands through the intensity and dynamics of markmaking and of linear movement. This involves the physicality and density of graphite on paper and the continuing interaction of control and freedom. The enigmatic relationship between reference, observation and abstraction has been a long-term issue in my work. In the drawing process I get some sense of an attempt to achieve a union of self and the perceptual field.
